Leaving Your Windows 11 Computer On for After-Hours Support
1. Connect the computer to power
If you are using a laptop, connect its charger and leave it connected.
2. Open the power settings
- Click the Start button.
- Click Settings.
- Select System from the left-hand menu.
- Select Power & battery.
- Click Screen, sleep & hibernate timeouts.
3. Change the timeout settings to Never
Change each available setting to Never:
- Turn my screen off after: Never
- Make my device sleep after: Never
- Make my device hibernate after: Never
On a laptop, Windows may show separate settings for:
- On battery power
- When plugged in
Set both versions to Never, particularly the When plugged in settings.
4. Laptop users: prevent sleep when the lid is closed
Only complete this section if you intend to close the laptop lid.
- Click the Start button.
- Type Control Panel and open it.
- Select Hardware and Sound.
- Select Power Options.
- On the left, click Choose what closing the lid does.
- Next to When I close the lid, change Plugged in to Do nothing.
- Click Save changes.
You can now close the laptop lid while it remains connected to power. Make sure the laptop is placed somewhere with adequate ventilation.
5. Before finishing for the day
Please confirm that:
- The computer is connected to power.
- The computer is connected to the internet.
- The remote-support application is running.
- The computer has not been shut down or restarted.
- Any required files or programs have been saved.
- For laptops, the lid is left open unless the lid setting above has been changed.
The screen may be locked for security. Locking the computer normally does not prevent authorised remote support software from connecting.
